Up until this point I have probably tracked Winter about 15x. I have done hardly any tracking with him but it has all been puppy tracks. Articles have been on the track but he walks over them and then wants to take off.
The beginning, the journey, and the ending all must have equal value to the dog for full points. Schutzhund tracking is judged on the dog's commitment to the track (drive for the track) and a deep nose. The dog must indicate articles and articles are worth massive points. I want to teach Winter to never ever walk over an article.
I want to teach Winter that the article has huge value and it is to his benefit to indicate it to me because when he does then I will pay him heavy.
I like this little mirror for articles because it is not an object a dog wants to chew or put in his mouth and it is flat and it is large enough I can drop food drops on it.
I want him to down/platz as fast as he can when he sees an article. Then I want the article between his two front paws and I want him to stare at it. Then I want him to remain in a platz while I lift my arm to display the articleand he cannot move. He wants to race off.
Currently, Winter just loves the journey. He never wants it to end. That is because all he has done is puppy tracks as I have been shaping behaviour for a deep nose and commitment to the track.
And I don't want to say anything. I want him to automaticall down and stare at that article when he sees it. Then when I put it on the track for an article he will know exactly what he must do for me to pay him.
I teach articles off the track because it prevents the possibility of creating conflict on the track.
