First time showing to this long time, well known judge. I found his judging to be lackluster. Not that he seemed bored, just that i got the feeling, what he picked did not matter? Well known for being political, this was manifest in any ring with a handler, especially the Group ring.

He has a habit of not giving OHs a fair shake. He will bend over backwards to be sure Handlers are given every opportunity.

this man is an awesome judge-puts up the best dog regardless of who is in the ring-would drive to show to him

Was impressed with his judging. very kind and gentle with the dogs, pleasant to exhibitors and chose the best dog in the ring without regard to who was on the other end of the lead.

Based on previous experience, I think he knows a good dog. However, I recently watched him judge the Herding Group and he awarded a Group placement to a dog that had such incorrect movement that exhibitors were commenting on it afterwards. The dog was shown by a one of a very well known professional handler duo.

Against my better judgement, I entered under this judge recently. I will not make this mistake again. He is rude, rough with the dogs, barely touches the dog after the head, does not know the correct placement of a wicket on the withers. Specifically, he held one dog's muzzle so tightly the dog began to quiver (the dog was not pulling back but standing perfectly still). He measured two dogs out by measuring above the withers (up on the dog's neck). There were several large bitches and none of them were measured. He had a 3-4 minute discussion with the ring steward while a dog was waiting on the table for the exam. He was constantly looking outside of the ring. Other than the teeth & head exam, his examination of the dogs was minimal at best. I wish I could give a positive remark but I cannot.

was very kind and gentle with the dogs- gave all a good going over. put up what he liked.

Thorough on exam and likes a dog that moves effortlessly. A heavy or lumbering dog will not do as well. He also likes a good expression in both. He does not look at the handler, he judges dogs. He will award a deserving class animal over specials and is not afraid to put up a nice example of either breed in the group.

This man has no clue on what a sheltie is suppose to be. He likes Low and long . He like to measure and can't even do that right. Wants to put it above the shoulder. I watch him measure and the handler knew what to do she show him were the shoulder was he was going to put it in front of the shoulder. Never will I show under this judge .

I only have a couple judges on my DNS list and he is one. I've given him time and time again and he doesn't even want to judge my dogs. Never watches them on the down n back or go around. Too busy with his cuff links or watch.

Very political judge. DNS

Seemed to know a good dog, liked pretty heads and outlines. BOB was a beautiful blue dog who was Typy and had a beautiful head and was a class dog
Jun 11, 20151AnonymousShetland Sheepdogs
Definitely on my DNS list after my first experience with him. Indifferent to the point of rudeness. Examination of dog was minimal at best, only looks up the lead. He judged locally after this experience and only drew 1 special, no class dogs.

Pleasant, concerned about the dogs in the heat, good ring procedures, gentle and pays attention to who he has moving.
Oct 21, 20144Christa SteelePapillons
Good thorough exam, soft handed with pups, friendly and fun in ring. Seems to prefer tri's, and that "Kirby" look! Not afraid to award pups or class dogs when deserved. Will put a class dog over specials if merited.

Mr. Bassett enjoys awarding puppies (or class dogs) BOB when he feels they merit the award (even if exhibitors may not agree). He generally doesn't care who is on the end of the lead and prefers bitches over dogs for BOB as well. He likes a nice side gait, correct topline, ATTENTION, and a very pretty face/head.

Showed to Mr. Bassett last Sunday and it was a good experience for my 3 nine mo. old pups. He was thorough, but gentle, and even talked to them in a soothing voice. He awarded my male WDBOWBOS and his litter mate took RWB. He was quick, but thorough on the table. The bitch that took breed did well with a handler.
Apr 29, 20142anonymousAustralian Shepherds
Very thorough exams and seems to recognize nice moving dogs but put up handlers with lesser dogs for WD & WB.

I have shown to Mr. Bassett twice now in the past 3 months. I have shown to him in the past year as well. He was in the middle of a panel so I tried again. He consistently picked faces. There were good dogs in the ring that were left out, some with owner handlers on them.

DNS he is a handlers judge, not good for the owner handler. Showed under recently and he went with the professionals

Mr. Bassett was very thorough in his examination of each entry and gave each his full attention in watching their movement. Did not appear political at all this day and is a judge I would definitely show to again.
May 20, 2013confettiChihuahua
Mr Basset has always been one of my favorite judges but this past weekend his choices were atrocious. Watched him in many breeds over a three day weekend and was amazed that he was so totally off the mark. Will show to him once more to give him another chance since maybe something else was going on in his life to distract him. If I see a repeat performance he will be on my DNS list.
Jun 20, 20121anonymousHavanese, Juniors
This judge is out in left field. A few weeks ago he gave our Junior first out of a big class and told her she was doing everything perfect. Then two weeks later he tells her she knows nothing about the breed standard and dumped her completely. She has been showing and finishing Havanese since she was 7 years old. Right she does know the breed standard. I do believe this judge needs to retire OR learn the standards better. DNS!!!!

Very consistent to the point of picking littermates and sire/offspring, but nothing that I'd want to take home with me. His idea of a good dog and mine apparently to not agree.
Aug 25, 20111redstaffStaffies
Really? Chose nothing alike and nothing with same type - seemed to spin and point. NO consistensy. Does not know the breed at all. Someone should help educate him on the breed b4 he accepts another assignment. His WD looked like an AST. Sorry to offend owner but I am sure he has heard this b4. Staffies are not Amstaffs or Bulldogs and he shoud know the differences. I watched this judge to see how he did but am so glad i did not give him an entry! Wont be either. UPDATE 2013 - He doesnt have a CLUE! He overlooked a GORGEOUS red male special for a bulldog who cant move, breath or have breed type! Unbelievable. I have no affiliation with either btw - I was only watching ringside. Didnt give him an entry. SO GLAD! **UPDATE 2016** No changes to my critiques. Looks like he is not planning to learn breed standards any time soon. BUT he sure knows his handlers.
May 11, 20112Windy GlenBichon Frise
Actually put up a winners bitch with a consistent limp on her back left paw.
Mar 30, 20101Kha-LingTT
What a waste of time. Excused a dog for over grooming that only had his hair brushed back from his eyes and gave the breed to a dog that had his head trimmed in a bob cut. If he were going to excuse one he should have excused both for over grooming. When spoke to he said we were wrong and he didn't care. And what made it even worse was the person showing the one that was excused was a Junior Handler, he could have used that time to educate a junior.
Dec 21, 20095anonymousBoston Terrier
Does not give a hoot who is on the end of the lead. He judges the dogs, which is very refreshing. Would show to him again any day!!!
May 11, 20094Kimeric CorgisPWC
Looks at the right end of the lead and gives everyone a fair look. Very good with puppies, and finds the right dogs. Will show to again.
Apr 29, 2008KristiBellagio Italian Greyhounds
I just showed Igs to this man. There was an entry of something like 10 Igs. I kid you not, he chose every single class backwards. I did not have a class entry . . . so I have no sour grapes. Hummmm. What was he looking at?????
Apr 23, 2008anonymousPembroke Corgi
was very RUDE! Never spoke. Put up people he knew. On my DNS list!
Mar 4, 20084PendragonShiba Inu
Very good with puppies and tolerant of 'soft dogs'.
Feb 15, 20085DreamWeaver PomeraniansPomeranians
He knows what he likes in a pom, and will put the type he likes up over his favorite handlers. Does not like overtrimming, knows the standard and judges to it. Seems to like an average size, and pretty head.
Oct 31, 20071Sunclipse Tibetan TerriersTibetan Terriers
I wouldn't waste my time with him again. I showed him an elegant dog, wonderful topline, and he dumped all dogs that day to a recognized face. I'll give him credit, he was consistent. I have never seen him judge dogs, so I don't know if he can. He does a fine job judging the handlers of the dogs. Completely lost in the TT ring.
Sep 20, 20071Susan PlouffPomeranian, Italian GreyhoundExpert!
You know, I hate to show to a judge who can't see beyond the end of the lead...especially when it is his favorite "gay buddies." He will "judge" (and is capable of doing it) if he doens't have one of his "buddies" in the ring. He will put up an inferior dog if he likes the handler, and I have seen it in multiple breeds. After the last time it happened, he will not get another entry from me.
Aug 23, 20073WOW Pomz & PinzPomeranian, HavaneseExpert!
He likes a very well presented dog. He is very much into coat and grooming. A breathtaking profile and stunning breed type will win his heart everytime. He tends to pick middle of standard for size. I feel breed type and beauty take preference to soundness.
Jun 22, 20073PrimeBluSilky Terrier
Judges Silkys much like he judges Yorkies. Appeared to be very much into coat and grooming. I did not terribly disagreed with his final choices. We just probably arrived at BOB differently.
